Drogon is massive in new ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 images

Image: macall b. polay/hbo

Baby dragons grow up is just one of the many tough lessons we’ve learned from watching Game of Thrones over the years. But in new photos of Season 7 debuted by Entertainment Weekly, Daenerys’ baby Drogon is roughly the size of a passenger plane, and he does not seem pleased.

As you can see, little Drogy (Drogu? Drogz? I’m open to ideas) has grown to a glorious size as he roars over flames likely of his own creation. Pathetic humans flee before him while his mother rides atop his full-grown scales, but even Dany may not be safe.

Game of Thrones returns July 16.

Is Arya back in Winterfell in ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7?

Image: macall b. polay

Summer is coming, which means that the Game of Thrones fandom is parched and thirsting for any hints about Season 7 (where is our trailer???). In several new photos debuted exclusively by Entertainment Weekly, we did get one hint about where Arya Stark might be heading back home.

In one of three new stills and a few behind-the-scenes shots, EW showed Arya riding a horse in broad daylight (a far cry from living incognito for years) and looking fretfully at…something.

In the first Season 7 stills, released in April, we saw Arya sitting at some sort of tavern, a large room not unlike where the Night’s Watch frequently meets for administrative meetings and/or dramatic arguments. As Mashable TV Editor Laura Prudom noted, the lighting seems conspicuously warm, but the youngest Stark daughter is still dressed for colder weather than she’s seen in years.

She’s similarly dressed in the new photo (are these from the same day in Arya’s life?), with a thick traveling cloak, sturdy boots, and layers to protect her from the cool air. She probably needs a bit more fur to journey to the Wall, but the outfit is more than appropriate for her long-lost home of Winterfell.

Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres July 16 on HBO.

‘Game of Thrones’ deaths recapped with artist’s clever flip book

As you prepare for the return of Game of Thrones in just over a month, it may be helpful to recap some of the key plot points. To that end, a helpful series of illustrations have been posted by artist Hannes Sommer on YouTube showing us every death that has occurred on the show in cleverly executed drawings with mixed media.

Of course, if you’re not up to date on the latest episode, here’s your Spoiler Alert warning because, yes, all the major character deaths are covered, and this video reminds us of just how creative each death was.

Season 7 of Game of Thrones will arrive on July 16 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.

The Night’s King has his eye on Jon Snow in creepy ‘Game of Thrones’ teaser

Wolf-dog named for ‘Game of Thrones’ direwolf dies

Ghost, a wolf-dog named after Jon Snow’s albino direwolf in Game of Thrones, died this week.

GoT author George R.R. Martin posted Tuesday about the animal’s death at New Mexico’s Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary.

The sanctuary posted a touching tribute to Ghost, part of their Westeros Pack of 10 rescued wolf-dogs named for direwolves and other characters from the fantasy series. Martin and his wife helped name the pack and raised money for the rescue center.

The sanctuary said Ghost died peacefully at home. In the HBO series the fictional Ghost is still alive and well, as far as we know. The new season returns on July 16, so we’ll know more soon.

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 has a ‘different pace’ than the rest of the show

The ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 7 Trailer Is Finally Here

Attention, citizens of Westeros, the wait is over: Hype is coming.

With the need to push production to colder months because winter has come on Game of Thrones, the wait for the Season 7 trailer has been torture. Its literally beenlike watching ice melt, which is what HBO made us do to find out the premiere date.

There have been some Season 7teasers and photos along the way, but now, by the mercy of the seven gods, the trailer is finally here.

In it, we see Dany (Emilia Clarke) finally reaching Westeros, the Lannisters possibly getting nervous, Arya (Maisie Williams) freezing her butt off, Littlefinger (Aiden Gillen) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) apparently having some problems and dragons big dragons.

One of the most interesting parts is Jon Snows confrontation with Littlefinger, which appears to happen in Winterfells crypts. Many fans are speculating thats where Jon will learn ofhis Targaryen heritage.

Just be ready. With only two seasons left, its not looking good for most of the characters. As the show says, All men must die.

Sansa Stark is the world’s best hope in the ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 trailer

The Game of Thrones Season 7 trailer dropped on Wednesday, and apart from almost breaking the internet, it gave us plenty to think about until July.

Like Sansa Stark, our reigning lady in the North, reunited with her half-brother (who is actually her full-cousin) Jon Snow and determined to resist the Lannister regime.

“Your father and brothers are gone, and yet here you stand,” Littlefinger whispers to Sansa in his usual creepy register. “The last, best hope against the coming storm.”

There’s a lot of truth to that, given that Sansa’s instinct saved Jon at the Battle of the Bastards and she’s probably playing Littlefinger like a freaking fiddle. As crowds intone “The King in the North!” for Jon (prompting traumatic Robb flashbacks for many of us), his success depends on Sansa.

Meanwhile, the youngest Stark sister has made the long journey north probably in a flash, the same way she left Braavos in the Season 6 finale. But the trailer shows no hint of a triumphant reunion in Arya’s future; she’s struggling to survive in the unforgiving cold, building small fires and avoiding the army of the dead.

As for Bran, he is probably 90 years old and 10 feet tall by now, as Mashable Senior Editor Chris Taylor notes. Bran, bye.

Will the Starks ever be together again? Will Ramsay Bolton’s ghost go on a murderous rampage just when they have a shot at happiness? Will Bran warg everyone to death?

We’ll find out when Game of Thrones returns on July 16.

An exact breakdown of how big Drogon will be in ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7

This is exactly the kind of Game of Thrones analysis detail I fully, fully approve of.

Following the release of that Season 7 image which showed Daenerys riding a very huge-looking Drogon, the people behind YouTube channel bridge4 have analysed exactly how big aenerys’ pet will be next Season and how his size compares to Balerion, the biggest dragon ever.

The TL:DW version? He’ll be big enough to chomp up Cersei, but not yet big enough to swallow a mammoth whole.

If that ‘Game of Thrones’ trailer signals anything, it’s that the Lannisters are still the house to beat

Game Of Thrones Season 7 Theory Explains Fight Between Jon Snow And Littlefinger

The Season 7 trailer for is finally here, so you know what that means: Its time to pick apart every single second and theorize about whats going to happen.

Weve got our own theories about Arya heading North for a dangerous escapade and an epic Lannister-Targaryen battlecoming up in the new season, but lets talk about whats going on with Jon Snow and Littlefinger.

One of the scenes from the new trailer that has the internet buzzing is a seconds-long glimpse at Jon Snow and Littlefinger going at it but why!?

Thats the question on everyones mind, but some fans may have figured out the answer, and if theyre right, its going to be a bombshell moment on the show.

So basically, in the short scene from the trailer we see Littlefinger lunge at Jon Snow and Jon attacking back. But more important than the fight itself is the setting, which to be in the crypts of Winterfell. In particular, it looks as though theyre next to the tomb of Eddard Starks sister Lyanna Stark.

SPOILER ALERT: The rest of this post will go into detail about Jon Snows parentage, which hasnt been officially revealed on the show yet. Dont read on if you want to remain pure.

So what does that mean? If they really are near Lyannas tomb, then we can assume that Littlefinger just told Jon about his true parentage and our favorite bastard did not take it well.

After all, if theres anyone in the Seven Kingdoms whod have all the dirty deets about Jon, it would for sure be Littlefinger.

Reddit

So now everyone is thinking Littlefinger is going to instigate a fight with Jon by telling him his mother is Lyanna Stark. Thinking his father his Ned Stark, Jon will assume Littlefinger is saying hes a product of incest and lash out.

In actuality, though, we know Jons parents are Lyanna Stark andRhaegar Targaryen, making him one of the last Targaryens in the world, along with Daenerys. It looks like this will be the scene in which Jon finally stops being Ned Starks bastard and learns the truth about his heritage.

Reddit

Season 7 will premiere on HBO on July 16.

Dany in Westeros makes ‘Game of Thrones’ ‘a new show’

Game of Thrones isn’t one for fan service unless it’s the service of mashing our hearts to pulp but Entertainment Weekly‘s latest cover story suggests we’ll finally get to see Daenerys stir shit up in Westeros.

Dany in Westeros makes Game of Thrones a new show, co-executive producer Bryan Cogman told EW. It has this amazing ripple effect throughout every storyline thats very exciting to explore. Theres a pace and urgency thats very palpable. This is the end game.

Besides Dany and her Westerosi enemies, another interaction we’d love to see in Season 7 is that elusive Stark reunion. Sansa and Jon Snow found their ways to each other in Season 6, only to come painfully close to Rickon before Ramsay Bolton reminded us that Starks can’t have nice things.

With Arya heading North this season and Bran wandering winter without a protector (R.I.P. Hodor), will the family reconvene at home base in Winterfell?

We’ll find out (maybe) when Game of Thrones returns July 16.

‘Game of Thrones’ fans decipher Daenerys’ battle map in Season 7 trailer

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 trailer just broke a record

The real-world stakes for Game of Thrones may not be as high as in this grisly fantasy, but a win is still a win. The Season 7 trailer, released Wednesday, became the highest viewed television trailer on the internet, setting a fine standard for the show’s buzziest season yet.

As of publishing, the trailer had 19 million views on YouTube and 41 million on Facebook, with almost 4 million more coming in from Twitter and all those numbers are climbing. A significant portion of views were in the first 24 hours, making it ostensibly the most-viewed television trailer debut in history.

According to HBO, the Game of Thrones Long Walk to the Throne promo for Season 7 is HBOs most watched tease/promo/trailer ever with 67.6 million multimedia views since March 30, breaking the record set by the Season 6 trailer (63.5 million lifetime views).

The tiny hint in that new ‘Game of Thrones’ dragon photo you may have missed

Game Of Thrones Season 7 Trailer Proves A Lannister-Targaryen Battle Is Coming

After much waiting and absurd anticipation-building tactics, HBO has finally released the trailer for Season 7.

The new trailer, which has countless layers left for fans to unfold and theorize about, leads up to the penultimateseason on the HBO hit.

However, there is one layer that proves one of the culminating battle weve all been waiting for will happen this season.

Its the battle between the Lannisters and the Targaryns; and by the looks of the trailer, fans will get the gory, bloody, incredibly directed, jaw-droppingly produced battle weve been waiting for.

To refresh your memory, Dany has both the army of the Unsullied and the Dothraki on her side, and Cersei is currently ruling the Iron Throne in Kings Landing.

Cersei Lannister and DaenerysTargaryenare the centers of the Season 7 trailer and for good reason.

Ive broken down the scenes that seemingly outline the Lannister/Targaryen battles below.

At 0:25, we see the Lannister army marching with their red, lion-bearing shields.

HBO

Following this, which we see under a voiceover of Cersei Lannister talking about her enemies, we see DaenerysTargaryen standing in front of the gates of Dragonstone, home of the Targaryens, with an army of Unsullied behind her (note: Greyworm to the right).

HBO

At 0:48, we see the Unsullied storming into Kings Landing.

HBO

A second later, at 0:49, we see an Unsullied pierce a Lannister armor-wearing soldier, while another lays on the ground.

HBO

At 1:13, we see Daenerys and Tyrion standing over a large table (hang in there, this comes into play in a second).

Seconds later, we see more fighting in Kings Landing between the Unsullied and the Lannister army.

HBO

This is immediatelyfollowed by a cut to the Dothraki army, in a different terrain, riding into battle on horses. You can see the army they are fighting is wearing Lannister armor.

HBoHBO

At 1:22, we see a lion figure being knocked over. By the looks of it, it is Tyrions hand at the same table he and Dany are standing at 1:13, signifying a possible defeat of the Lannisters.

HBO

And finally, we see the Dothraki army being joined by one of Daeneryss dragons.

HBO

Of course, this is all speculation based on the Season 7 trailer, which was just released today, May 24. Well all have to patiently wait until July 16 to really get our answers.

The First ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 7 Trailer Just Dropped And It Looks Insane

Thank the Seven Gods, we FINALLY have our first proper, full-length look at the new season of !

HBO just released a stunning 1:48 trailer for Season 7, and it looks like this is going to be the most exciting season of the fantasy epic yet!

The new trailer starts with Cersei, now sitting on the Iron Throne, detailing her enemies in every direction:Daeneryss army to the east, Iron Island ships to the west, Arya Stark to the north, and a mysterious hand sharpening a sword to the south.

But obvi Cersei isnt scared! She assures her bro/lover/Hand of the Queen Jamie shes going to defeat anyone who comes against her, and TBH after last season,Im sure she will. She also has a harsh diss at Tyrion, by saying she and Jamie are the last Lannisters who count. Ummm, ouch!

Just wait until she sees Tyrions new friends: three gigantic dragons!!

Yep theres a ton of dragon action in the new trailer, which bodes well for a high-flying, fire-breathing new season of!

We even get to see one of Danis babies flying menacingly over a charging army towards the end of the new trailer in an epic shot.

HBO

The full-length trailer comes after a couple of short, mysterious teasers forthe new season.

Back in March, HBO dropped a voiceover-heavy teaser featuring all the house sigils crumbling, and then last month we got another teaser showing Jon Snow, Cersei Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen all making their way to their respective thrones.

Both teasers end with a close-up of the eye of a White Walker, suggesting this will be the season when winter finally comes to Westeros (AKA, the Game of Thrones characters are finally going to have to deal with the murderous, nearly invincible White Walkers).

The new season of will premiere on July 16.

George R. R. Martin Likens Trump To His Most Sadistic ‘Game Of Thrones’ Character

George R. R. Martin is bringing winter early to President Donald Trump.

The acclaimed author has compared the commander-in-chief to one of the most brutal, sadistic and despicable characters from Game of Thrones King Joffrey Baratheon:

I think Joffrey is now the king in America, Martin said in an interview with Esquire published Wednesday. And hes grown up just as petulant and irrational as he was when he was thirteen in the books.

MartinsSong of Ice and Fire book series is the basis of HBOs fantasy epic. Shortly before the 2016 election, he said Trump was unfit to lead this nation.

Actor Kit Harington, who portrays the character Jon Snow in the show, also commented on the current occupant of the White House and revealed why he refuses to call Trump by his official title.

Mr. Donald Trump I wouldnt call him President, Ill call him Mister, he said. I think this man at the head of your country is a con artist.

Ryan Murphy Gives Fans First Look At Billie Lourds American Horror Story Character

Were finally getting some more info about the mysterious seventh season of

Ryan Murphy posted our first look at Billie Lourds character in the politically-charged new season of the horror anthology series. Her newly-frosted locks have the internet in a frenzy, theorizing about how she will be involved in the election-centric season.

The new photo shows Billie putting on a pair of shades in a flower-covered sundress.

But the big takeaway is her hair: Shes rocking long, silvery white locks, instead of her normal blonde. And Ryan included a cheeky little phrase in his caption that is spurring some speculation as well, writing Winter is coming.

Of course, the most obvious explanation for Ryans caption is the new trailer dropped on the same day, and he was just making a little joke that also tied in with Billies new hair color. But fans dug deeper into the caption and now think it may be teasing Billies character may have a connection to a past character.

If Billies character really is named Winter, could she be related to the Lana Winters, Sarah Paulsons intrepid reporter from the fan-favorite second season,? Since was set in 1964, the timing would most likely work out where Billies character would be Lanas granddaughter if they are related.

Reddit

But Billies new hair also teases something else. Last week, Ryan posted a photo of what appears to be Evan Peters new hair for the season, which is dyed blue.

So now, for the season themed around the 2016 presidential election in America, weve seen blue hair, white hair and whats left? Red hair, of course!

It seems likely the next tease Ryan gives us will be of someone with red hair, and the only confirmed cast members we havent caught glimpses of yet are Sarah Paulson, Billy Eichner, and recently added Leslie Grossman.

So it might be one of those three, but some fans are also tossing around the idea it might be a much more dramatic reveal about the return of an favorite: Lady Gaga.

Reddit

Some fans have pointed outGaga dyed her hair red recently, and since shein the past two seasons of the show, perhaps shell be the redhead on the upcoming season of.

Hmmm, interesting well just have to wait and see what happens!

7 ‘Game of Thrones’ trailer moments that mean more than you think

There are no White Walkers in the ‘Game of Thrones’ trailer which somehow makes them even scarier

You May Have Missed This Detail About Arya In The New ‘Game Of Thrones’ Trailer

Winter is finally here, you guys, and its going to be epic. just dropped its first full-length trailer for season 7and it proves that Westeros is about to be thrown upside down this season.

But with all of that action going on, you might have missed one pretty crucial detail about what the youngest Stark is up to.

It looks like all the action is coming to Kings Landingthis season as the major candidates for the Iron Throne finally challenge Cersei for control of the kingdom, but it doesnt look like Arya Stark is going in the same direction as Daenerys, Jon Snow, the Iron Island armies, and all the other major players in the game.

Instead, we see Arya alone in the snow trying to make a fire. Hmmm, where is it snowy all the time and super uninhabitable? Could she be north of The Wall!?

HBO

Prior to now, the only characters weve seen go north of The Wall have been two of Aryas brothers: Jon Snow and some other members of the Nights Watch, and Bran Stark along with his few travel companions. Theyve been the only characters in the series to show any real concern about a potential uprising of White Walkers, the nearly indestructible ice zombies that reside beyond The Wall.

If Arya is indeed going north of The Wall this season, shell most likely run into some White Walkers as well, and maybe shell even reunite with Bran, whos still chilling up there. Prior teasers have hinted that the White Walkers will be a big part of season 7, so its totally likely that Arya will learn all about them up north.

HBO

Then again, we wouldnt really expect Arya to steer clear of all the action in Westeros. After all, the last time we saw her, she was more hell-bent than ever to complete her kill list, having just slit Walder Freys throat with her new illusory skills in the season 6 finale. Since nearly all of the people left on her list are down in Casterly Rock, wouldnt she head that way?

Hmm I guess well just have to wait and see what Arya really gets up to in the new season of when it premieres on July 16. Until then, check out the new trailer for the season below.

‘American Horror Story’ Was Renewed For 2 More Seasons

If your idea of a good time is watching Lady Gaga play herself with a bad accent and/or listening to people murder each other creatively while you cover your eyes, youre in luck. was renewed for two more seasons, which is surprising to exactly no one because as fucked up as always winds up being, its also the shit. Plus, the ratings are through the roof every season so its not like it was in danger of getting cancelled.

ICYMI, everyone lost their shit last year when the shows creator, Ryan Murphy, dangled the possibility of a Murder House/Coven crossover season. Well, it turns out hes a fucking tease (and actors’ schedules are apparently hard to work around). There arent any plans for the crossover to happen in 2017, so we still have to wait to watch Jessica Lange and Connie Britton try to out-weird each other on the same screen again.

On the other hand, were still getting two new seasons of bizarre shit. Also, more shirtless Evan Peters. I guess we can deal.

Jimmy Kimmel proves the Trump administration is basically ‘Game of Thrones’ with Red Wedding skit

BTW

Jimmy Kimmelcompared the Trump administration to Game of Thrones last night with a Westeros-inspired reimagining of Trumps recent luncheon with television anchors.

The luncheon was off the record, although many were able toreportTrumps claim that appointing a special counsel to investigate alleged connections between his campaign and Russia hurts our country terribly.” That didnt stop Kimmel from showing what he called exclusive footage of the luncheon, which was basically the Red Wedding with different faces. And its just as brutal as Jake Tapper, Rachel Maddow, and Anderson Cooper are among the fallen.

Uh wow, only Tucker Carlson survived, Kimmel quipped. Tune in next season to see how it all turns out.

If you loved Downton Abbey, chances are you will already have earmarked the sofa for next Monday night, in preparation for Part I of the next epic British costume drama due to hit U.S. TV screens, War and Peace.

The eight-hour BBC adaptation, complete with heaving bosoms and lots of very silly hats, will be screened in four two-hour blocks on all the A&E channels (Lifetime, History, A&E). Produced by the BBC and Harvey Weinstein, and with a cast list comprising the cream of British acting talent including Paul Dano (12 Years a Slave), Lily James (Lady Rose of Downton Abbey fame), Gillian Anderson, and Jim Broadbent (Iris), the lavish series has already aired its first two hours in the U.K. to ecstatic reviews.

But this War and Peace comes with some controversy: Writer Andrew Daviesa veteran screenwriter who, among other triumphs, adapted the original House of Cards novels for the BBChas been accused of mercilessly sexing up the plot of Leo Tolstoys 1,800-page epic account of the Napoleonic Wars and Russian society. Most scandalously, hes included an incestuous relationship between Hlne (Tuppence Middleton) and her brother Anatole (Callum Turner). They are seen in bed together in the first few minutes of the new adaptation.

Davies has said the incestuous liaison between Hlne and Anatole Kuragin is crucial to his adaptation and denied that he invented the relationship. Brother and sister Hlne and Anatole are in an incestuous relationship, but Tolstoy indicates this so subtly that most readers, including me, at first reading, miss it altogether, he todl the Radio Times. This relationship, and their attitude to it, is so crucial to our understanding of them that for me, at least, it needs to be on screen.

The Daily Beast asked several prominent scholars of the great Russian epic if they felt Davies was justified in including the plotline, or if indeed the incestuous affair was a case of extreme dramatic license.

Professor Faith Wigzell, emeritus professor of Russian literature and culture at University College London:

There is something in the book about it, but in the form of rumor. At the end of Vol. I, Part 2, Pierre recognizes that there is something not righteven nastyin his feelings for Hlne and recalls that hed been told that Anatole had been in love with her and she with him and that was why Anatole was sent away.

Unlike any of the other female characters, Hlne is not herself attracted to any of the men around and docilely does what her father wants, by implication perhaps because her heart (such as it is) has been given to her brother.

In the BBC adaptation, Pierre does not seem to have much in the way of perceptive insights but is just a social klutz, so Davies has moved the incest from rumor to action. I dont mind too much, though I think it could have been done another way.

However, I am hating the BBC adaptation less than I feared (its always hopeless when you have taught a novel for 30 years and you see it dramatized). Im still watchingand not out of masochism.

Professor Catriona Kelly, professor of Russian, University of Oxford:

Andrew Davies isnt making it up. Tolstoy has Pierre doubting whether he should marry Hlne Kuragin, because of the rumors she is in love with her brother, and he with him:

, , , . – , , – . , , , , .

But shes stupid, Ive often said so myself, he thought. There is something nasty in the feeling shes aroused in me, something forbidden. I was told her brother Anatole was in love with her, and she with him, that there was a whole scandal about it, and Anatole was sent away on account of it all.

The word that Tolstoy uses for sent away suggests this was done by the family. Note, though, the implication is that the incestuous relationship is in the past, not the present.

Natalia Krylova, Ph.D., lecturer of Russian language and culture, University of Minnesota:

In the original text, any kind of incestuous relations between the two, otherwise doubtlessly sinister characters, is less than obvious.

When Pierre recalls the the rumors to which he was once exposed, he cant provide a reliable source of this information. Given how starry-eyed, imaginative, and impressionable a person he is, it is not quite obvious whether it is a figment of his own imagination or a sure fact.

In one later episode, Anatole comes to Hlne to borrow some money and kisses her naked shoulders. But Hlnes naked shoulders are her signature appearance traitrepresentative of her dressing style and womens fashion of the time, as well as of the particular archetype of femininity she is the explication of (beautiful Helen of Troy). Secondly, the ways in which affection was expressed (a) in Russia and (b) in the beginning of the 19th century were strikingly different from the modern Western standards. I dont believe that Anatoles kissing his adult sibling was, in fact, meant by Tolstoy to be a demonstration of his characters incestuous inclinations.

I do not belong to the conservative cohort who believes that all classic art is a sacred depot of untouchable artifacts that should be left alone in their original / petrified form. But I hate some contemporary film directors attempts to play on the most primitive instincts of their audience in order to secure commercial success for their productions.

I will watch the adaptationbut I am totally prepared to be perpetually frustrated and annoyed over the weeks when this series will be on the air.

The ‘Game Of Thrones’ Spinoff News Gets More Ridiculous

When it comes to spinoff shows, Game of Thrones doesnt want to be spokes on a wheel. It wants to break the wheel!

Series author George R.R. Martin cleared up news about the development of HBOsfour Game of Thrones spinoffson his Not A BlogSunday, revealing that a fifth show is now in the works with a secret writer. Surprise!

We had four scripts in development when I arrived in LA last week, but by the time I left we had five. We have added a fifth writer to the original four. No, I will not reveal the name here. HBO announced the names of the first four, and will no doubt announce the fifth as well, once his deal has closed. Hes a really terrific addition, however, a great guy and a fine writer, and aside from me and maybe Elio and Linda, I dont know anyone who knows and loves Westeros as well as he does.

If there are five spinoffs on the way,HBO might be in need of some of that Lannister gold to pay for them. But Martin himself thinks its unlikely that five new shows will be making it on-air.

For now, the author wants us to know that there is an order for five pilot scripts and he is working with all the writers, not just two as previously reported.

Also, the spinoffs arent going to be spinoffs like we usually think of them. Theyre all going to be prequels from stories we likely havent heard before:

So all of you who were hoping for the further adventures of Hot Pie are doomed to disappointment. Every one of the concepts under discussion is a prequel, rather than a sequel. Some may not even be set on Westeros. Rather than spinoff or prequel, however, I prefer the term successor show. Thats what Ive been calling them.

But there wont be any Roberts Rebellion or Dunk and Egg prequels as of now. Sorry, everyone.

And for those who are wondering, Martin reiterated that hes still working on his next book in theSong of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter. But, oh sweet summer child, you probably shouldnt expect it to come anytime soon.

At least we have the possibility of five new Game of Thrones shows on the way.

Open that wine, Tyrion. Its time to turn up.

George RR Martin says Game of Thrones spin-offs will all be prequels and announces a fifth

After HBO reveals plans for TV offshoots from their hit adaptation, Martin promises he is still working on sixth book The Winds of Winter

Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin has reassured fans that he will complete the sixth novel in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, despite working with screenwriters on five new TV spin-offs. But he has admitted that the TV commitments had pushed the hotly anticipated book down the agenda.

Yes, I am still working on Winds of Winter and I will continue working on it until its done, Martin wrote on his blog. But fans, who have already waited six years for the latest instalment in the fantasy series, should not hold their breath. I will confess, I do wish I could clone myself, or find a way to squeeze more hours into the day, or a way to go without sleep. But this is what it is, so I keep juggling, he added before listing his commitments: The Winds of Winter, five new TV shows for HBO, and four new Wild Card books.

Martins comments came after HBO, producer of the Game of Thrones TV show, announced he was working with them on four spin-offs from the blockbuster TV series. Explaining that an additional fifth show was also planned, and that all of them were prequels, he told fans that they wouldnt follow up on Game of Thrones like other famous spin-offs, citing Joey from Friends and Frasier from Cheers. What we are talking about are new stories set in the secondary universe (to borrow Tolkiens term) of Westeros and the world beyond, the world I created for A Song of Ice and Fire, he wrote.

Martin said that he had been working with HBO on the projects since August 2016, when he pitched two possible shows one of which is among those in development. Max Borenstein, Jane Goldman, Brian Helgeland and Carly Wray are working with Martin on screenplays for the pilots, while an unnamed fifth person has been pulled in for a fifth pilot, Martin said.

Martins fifth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Dance With Dragons, was published in 2011 after a five-year hiatus. The series was launched in 1991 and was inspired by the Wars of the Roses and Walter Scotts epic Ivanhoe. Though originally intended to be a cycle of three books, the writer extended the series to seven volumes. The final instalment will be called A Dream of Spring.

Fans frustrated by the long wait between volumes are unlikely to be comforted by the knowledge that Martin is working on the TV shows. Apart from taking him away from the novel, Martin admitted the scripts in development may never see the light of day. Decades of experience in television and film have taught me that nothing is ever really certain, he said, adding that he thought it unlikely all five new shows would be commissioned to feed fans appetite for his brand of swords and sorcery. How many pilots will be filmed, and how many series might come out of that, remains to be seen, he added.

George R.R. Martin reveals a fifth ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoff is in the works

Nearly two weeks after news broke that HBO was working on four potential Game of Thrones spinoffs, George R.R. Martin gave fans an update on what isand isnthappening with them.

Taking to LiveJournal, he confirmed that the spinoffs were in the early stages, although hes not exactly a fan of the word.

For what it’s worth, I don’t especially like the term spinoff, and I don’t think it really applies to these new projects, he wrote. What we’re talking about are new stories set in the secondary universe (to borrow Tolkien’s term) of Westeros and the world beyond, the world I created for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE. It is a world, and a pretty big one, and if there were eight million stories in the naked city back in the 50s, just think how many more there are in an entire world, and one with thousands of years of recorded history.

These potential successor shows, as Martin called them, will take place in the world that Game of Thrones brought to life, but they wouldnt be sequels to Game of Thrones, so think prequel rather than sequel. With Martins hundreds of years of Westerosi history spread out through The World of Ice and Fire, The Lands of Ice and Fire, and the unpublished Fire and Blood (Martins version of The Silmarillion with the Targaryen family history), theres plenty of territory to explore without looking beyond the current fight for the Iron Throne.

Martin been working with HBO on a successor show for months and even pitched concepts himself, only one which is being developed further. Hes still heavily involved with the process, having worked with all four of the writers working on conceptsnot just two, as early reports indicatedand since the original news broke, Martin revealed that a fifth writer is working on a development. He notes that just because HBO has now greenlit five concepts, it doesnt mean that all five shows will be made into pilots or even make it onto the air.

No, I will not reveal the name here, Martin said. HBO announced the names of the first four, and will no doubt announce the fifth as well, once his deal has closed. He’s a really terrific addition, however, a great guy and a fine writer, and aside from me and maybe Elio and Linda , I don’t know anyone who knows and loves Westeros as well as he does.

Martin also ruled out two commonly cited possibilities for successor shows so as to not let fans get their hopes up. None of the shows are about Roberts Rebellion, mostly because hes says he’s not interested in telling a story that will be fully revealed by the end of A Song of Ice and Fire. (He also confirmed that hes still working on The Winds of Winter.)

The other one touches on a familiar problem for Martin, even though he did at one point endorse the idea. If a Dunk & Egg TV show happened, HBO would probably finish telling it before he did, just like it did with Game of Thrones.

We’re not doing Dunk & Egg, he said. Eventually, sure, I’d love that, and so would many of you. But I’ve only written and published three novellas to date, and there are at least seven or eight or ten more I want to write. We all know how slow I am, and how fast a television show can move. I don’t want to repeat what happened with GAME OF THRONES itself, where the show gets ahead of the books. When the day comes that I’ve finished telling all my tales of Dunk & Egg, then we’ll do a tv show about them… but that day is still a long ways off.

Martinwont reveal any further details about the concepts or those shows, so now fans are left to do what they do best: speculate freely.

‘Game of Thrones’ superfan Kobe Bryant hung out with George R.R. Martin

Along with the rest of the world: Kobe Bryant loves Game of Thrones.

Unlike the rest of us: the retired basketball star has endless resources, and yesterday got to meet George R.R. Martin to learn about “the art of story.” Casual.

The pair took a photo to commemorate the meeting:

Bryant has made no secret of his GoT fandom, after the baller told Sports Illustrated that he binge-watched the entire TV series months after his final NBA game and his wife got him a signed book for Christmas last year.

The one-time MVP has never been afraid to reach out to people he admires, like Vogue’s Anna Wintour, Nike CEO Mark Parker, and Apple’s Jony Ive. Now that he’s met Martin, the basketball star has his eyes on another prestigious author and that’s Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.

Your move, J.K.
