This Game Of Thrones Fan Theory Suggests What Might Have Happened To Hodor

Warning: this article contains spoilers (and speculation) from Game of Thrones!

During Monday’s episode of Game of Thrones, we saw a side to Hodor that, quite frankly, we never thought we’d see.

During Bran’s flashback, we witnessedthe gentle giant as a young (still pretty giant) man, andwe learnt that he was once a stable boy called Wylis who could talk.

Hodor wasn’t always Hodor, and so something must have happened to make him that way. But what?

Well, one increasingly popular theory posits that the young Wylis had the ability to warg into other consciousnesses. Just as Bran can warg into Hodor, or his direwolf Summer, Wylis could warg into people or animals.

Reddit user Gbinasia explains that as a stable boy, Wylis would most likely have chosen a horse to warg into:

“And if the (possibly) only girl treating him nicely was Lyanna, it would make complete sense that this is the horse he would warg into. White is a symbol of purity, innocence, and Wyllis/Hodor is all that. He could warg into that horse so that he gets pet, brushed and generally receive attention no girls would give him. Since Rhaegar and Lyanna would eventually run away from everyone, it also makes sense that they would both be on horses while doing so and Wyllis/Hodor would have been witness to many events of that storyline.

So why would Hodor lose his speaking abilities? My guess is that the horse was slain during battle while Hodor was warging into it, which would explain why he is a very much a simpleton now and is afraid of fighting and lightning.”

Like Hodor, horses are scared of lightning, and like Hodor, horses carry people around on their backs. Bran is always being warned not to warg into animals for too long, as he risks loosing what makes him human. Maybe that’s what happened to Hodor.

It’s not the only theory. One Reddit user is going as far to suggest that Hodor could be The Great Other – god of the white walkers – in disguise. While this is pretty outlandish (and our money is definitely on the horse theory), Redditors havepointed out that Norse God of Winter is called Hod, and so maybe Hodor repeating “Hodor” is a clue hidden in plain sight…

Maybe Hodor is this God (disguised as a simpleton), bringing Bran north of the Wall for some as-yet unknown nefarious purposes. Or maybe, the Great Other has warged into Hodor – against his will – and is forcing him to do his bidding.

As we said, our money’s on the horse theory.. But let us know what you think.
